Match Report A battling performance against stern opposition, falling just short of equality. Thanks especially to Ajna and Hugh for traveling to Plymouth only to discover that Devon were two players short. Richard also, for putting himself in harm's way despite being under the weather. As usual, Devon were tough opponents and as so often, we performed relatively well, even coming tantalisingly close to a result. Today, the lower boards shone. David scored against the formidable Bill Ingham and Percy went the distance, keeping his head in trying circumstances to secure the point. Bryan allowed the experienced arbiter and all-round splendid fellow (providing boards, sets, clocks, scoresheets, refreshments and geniality) Tony Tatam to escape, with a demonstration of expertise in the discontinuous threefold-repetition draw claim (nevertheless a valuable contribution). Jeff and Nigel more than held their own against very experienced and strong players. Kieran and Richard similarly, therefore Cornwall drew the 6-to-14 board match. Colin, trusty stalwart of Cornish chess, characteristically gave his all, on this occasion without reward. In the top-5 competition, only Ian managed to tame his opponent, captain Underwood. Lloyd fought hard against in-form Homer, Jeremy strayed after time scramble equality and Clive fell foul of a powerful knight sacrifice. Graham (Bolt) seemed to allow me all the time and space in the world, yet I somehow conspired with him to have precious little of either. Finally, by no means leastly, thank you Oliver for making your debut representing our county. We all wish you the very best for your life in Scotland. |
