Match Captain's Report

Cornwall won 13-3. There was a certain symmetry about the result with the top six boards being drawn and the bottom ten won, unfortunately the bottom six by default. The gloucester captain notified us prior to the match and after some travel rearrangements then we had the luxury of having a travelling reserve, myself. As a result of this I was able to watch the games.

First to finish was Tim Manton, returning to the cornwall team after a long non chess playing absence with a very simple win. Good to see him back playing. Gary Trudeau was the next to win. Gary seems to have been in good form recently. Colin won with his Patent (?) 0-0 against the old main line Bg5 Najdorf. You need nerves of steel to play this. Percy Gill ground his opponent down to win a long game.

Of the draws David Saqui’s was a long drawn out rook and pawn ending which I thought his opponent did well to draw. Apart from Jeremy’s game the other four were relatively uneventful. Jeremy’s game ended controversially but seemingly amicably.

The new venue was spacious and we will try to use it again.

The other match played today finished Devon 12.5 Somerset 3.5.

The union stage of the completion ended with us in second place with 50%. Devon won with 3 out of 3. Gloucs were third with 1 out of 3 and somerset last with 0.5 from 3. Devon were much better than the rest. We came second because we turned out 16 players per match and were able to get our players to play regularly.

As usual Devon will play in the u180 competion. We qualify for the first round of the inter region completion and gloucs will play in the preliminary round. The draw will be done next month.

Match Captain's Report

Firstly I would like to welcome two newcomers to the squad this year Jamie Morgan and Percy Gill, Percy returns after I believe a twenty year absence. They are very welcome.

The team we fielded was only short of two players who have made themselves available this year. I was unable to raise a second team as we only had three other players. If other players wish to play them can they contact me.

Devon put out their usual strong team . They appear to have at least four times as many players as ourselves. Their declared under 160 team had a board 12 graded 155.

The games were much closer than the final result looks. After two hours I looked around and thought we were only slightly behind.

Two particular games stood out .Colin Sellwood seems to be making a habit of beating strong Devon players. I sat next to a really interesting game involving James Hooker.

As my game was the last to finish, I didn’t see much of the other games, but David Saqui must have played particularly well to hold an unpleasant position.

The final result was ½ point behind that which gradings would have predicted. That was my fault for losing a game that I was a pawn up in at the time control.

Thanks to everybody who played and I hope for a better result in our next match v somerset in the new year.
