North Cornwall

Introduction
Following the demise of the Newquay & North Cornwall club in 2022 a local chess void was created, which has been only partly filled by an initiative by John Fernley to provide a chess club venue, in Newquay. The North Cornwall Chess Club aims to complement that club night activity by providing a team structure able to compete in County events and specifically to enter County league competitions.

Affiliation
The club is affiliated to the Cornwall County Chess Association (CCCA), and competes in competitions organised by the association.

Officer roles
The club is organised through the following roles:

Secretary: responsible for liaising with the CCCA; organising matches; and booking a venue for home matches

Team Captain: responsible for selecting available players to participate in each match.

Treasurer: responsible for collecting sufficient dues from members to pay for venue booking, fees and related consumables (Score sheets, Tea/Coffee/Milk etc.)

Equipment provider: responsible for bringing sufficient chess boards/set/clocks & consumables to home matches

An individual may assume more than one role; there may be more than one team, for entry into separate competitions.

Venue
The club’s preferred home venue is the Wadebridge Bowls Club. When this is unavailable, for example when pre-booked by someone else, the Egloshayle Pavilion next door is a possible fallback option.

Match nights
The preferred playing night for home matches is Monday. When necessary, for example to overcome venue booking complications, another night may be chosen. There are no internal club nights – the club only meets to play matches.
